Det var i köket hos lagårdskarlens dotter Edit Astrid fick höra den saga som först väckte hennes läshunger – en lust till böcker som varade livet igenom. I skolan är Astrid duktig på att skriva och blir kallad för Vimmerbys Selma Lagerlöf efter att ha fått en uppsats publicerad i Vimmerby Tidning – där hon senare också får arbete
