*Niederungen* ist das erste Werk von Herta Müller, das 1982 in Bukarest und 1984 in einer überarbeiteten Fassung im Berliner Rotbuch Verlag erschien. Das Buch ist eine Sammlung von Geschichten über das Leben in Rumänien unter dem Kommunismus, die die Gewalt und die Korruption veranschaulichen und auf den Erfahrungen der Autorin in ihrer Jugend in einem Dorf im deutschsprachigen Teil des Landes basieren.

Herta Müller (born 17 August 1953) is a Romanian-German novelist, poet, essayist and recipient of the 2009 Nobel Prize in Literature. She was born in Nițchidorf, Timiș County in Romania; her native languages are German and Romanian. Since the early 1990s, she has been internationally established, and her works have been translated into more than twenty languages.
