Deux adolescents, Troy Turner, un psychopathe, et Rand Duchay, simple d'esprit, enlèvent et tuent un enfant dans un centre commercial de Los Angeles. Troy meurt derrière les barreaux. Rand est libéré à 21 ans. Hanté par son expérience, il contacte le psychologue Alex Delaware mais meurt brutalement peu après. Aidé de l'inspecteur Milo Sturgis, Alex va faire la lumière sur ce décès.
