A la fin du XXe siècle, un vieil homme se fait tabasser et voler son portefeuille par un groupe de voyous romains mais il ne va pas tarder à récupérer son bien, arme à la main. Le roman, qui se déroule entre 1977 et 1992, s'inspire de la bande de la Magliana, organisation romaine qui se constitua sur le modèle de la Mafia et mit la capitale en coupe réglée.
