Grasafræðingurinn Friðrik B. Friðjónsson að Brekku tekur stúlkuna að sér og búa þau saman á föðurleifð hans þar til hún deyr. Hefjast þá átök Friðriks og séra Baldurs Skuggasonar, sem er prestur Dalbúa og ekki allur þar sem hann er séður.
