Carl Richard Jacobi was born and raised in Minneapolis, and lived there throughout his life. In 1927 he attended the University of Minnesota. While at university, he began writing for campus magazines, and he became an editor at The Minnesota Quarterly. In 1931, after having graduated, he became a news reporter and book and drama reviewer for the Minneapolis Star. He later became the editor of Midwest Media, a radio trade journal. After two years there, he became a full-time writer at a cabin at Minnewashta in Minneapolis.
