I thought that this had something of the "Lars and the Real Girl" (2007) as the fantasy of a man seeking comfort from that latex version of a partner goes full circle and turns into one with a virtual one without even a stopper to top it up with. "Theodore" (Joaquin Phoenix) is just about divorced from "Catherine" (Rooney Mara), whom he still very much loves, and is struggling with the loneliness of a life that's occasionally spent socialising but mostly spent gaming on his own at home. He sees an ad for a new virtual companion operating system and so into his life comes the self-named "Samantha" (Scarlett Johansson). This isn't just a disjointed voice in the room, though, this is a programme that can grow, can associate and that can develop into something altogether more personal in it's - or perhaps it's best writing "her" - relationship with the owner. The more time they spend in each other's company, the closer they become and the happier the hitherto dejected "Theodore" becomes.
