When King Gerlach dies, he asks Merlin the Magician to care for Baby Arthur and do his best to see that when Arthur is grown, he takes his rightful place as King. Despite Arthur's entreaties to Merlin to let him become his apprentice, Merlin insists that there are more important things in store for him.
