After financial struggles force her family to relocate, Babette is relegated to being their domestic maid. Next door, a single mother struggles to care for her mentally challenged adult son, Bobby. Babette agrees to look after Bobby when his mother is away. As they spend time together, her initial pity turns into a deep emotional bond, but their connection triggers immediate hostility from her family and the community.
