Max, 10, spends Christmas with his family at his grandmother Mimi's house in the mountains. Mimi tells Max stories about trolls, elves, and fairy tale creatures. Max believes her stories, and all his cousins make fun of him. One day, Max walks on the frozen lake, but the ice breaks and he falls into the icy water. He is saved by a troll.
