The opening hours can feel unforgiving, and I wouldn’t blame anyone for bouncing off it early. But for players willing to stick with it, there’s something very special here. Impressive, still: the game is still only in Early Access. It offers a fresh take on the roguelite formula by stripping controls down to their simplest form and focusing entirely on choice, probability, and consequence. You don’t need fast reactions or complex strategies. You just need the courage to make a decision and accept what follows. This is exactly the kind of experimentation I love seeing from indie developers. Sol Cesto may not be welcoming at first (or ever, depending on how you view it), but once it gets under your skin, it’s very hard to forget.

It works when the player manages to read the risk rather than suffer it; it creaks when chance takes back everything the math had built. An easy recommendation for anyone who loves the reasoned gambling of roguelites; a harder sell for anyone after dense execution or narrative.

So Many GamesDave JacksonApr 20263.5/5 starsSumming it up and recommending it in binary terms leaves too much out—I did enjoy playing it, but I didn’t feel engaged or satisfied by the whole package. I spent the middle hours forcing myself to boot it up but fist-pumped at the end when I finished a run with the weakest character. Games (and critics) contain multitudes, and Sol Cesto seems to contain both more and less than meets the eye. Its true appeal comes down to manipulating and spinning that figurative wheel, which has more depth at its edges than at its core, but its core alone will be enough for some to bask in the sun’s light.
