I really enjoyed the investigations in Nobody Wants to Die, but I felt that one crime scene I will name the “Red Room” was a bit too dragged out. The way you can rewind time was excellent and reminded me of the game, Remember Me. Nobody Wants to Die, has fun dialogue and intriguing story to tell, while successfully doing the classic Noir-style. I wouldn’t mind a little action with some gunplay, but that’s just me nit-picking. Honestly I wish I could rewind time a play for the first time again! And for that reason I’m awarding Nobody Wants to Die, the Thumb Culture Platinum Award.

Like the best genre fiction, Nobody Wants to Die uses its narrative, character, and world to express some deeper concerns. In this case, the allegory is about the downside of immortality and the specters of power and wealth. Some of the game parts don’t work as effectively as the writing and acting, but Nobody Wants to Die leaves a strong, lasting impression. It’s one of the most original and striking games I’ve played this year.

Nobody Wants to Die struggles to reach a satisfying conclusion, which is, perhaps fittingly, indicated by its very title. There’s a serial killer, conspiracy theory, James’s traumatic past, his current partner’s illicit body-rental surrogacy, and a class riot. The game’s body-swapping shenanigans mashes several of those plots into a confusing showdown that may leave you unsure as to who you’re even confronting. The ending that my choices led to—the point at which you’d most want to do a reconstruction—was abrupt and disappointing, leaving the fate of many characters in question. How unfortunate, then, that out of all the places in which the game allows you to rewind time and relive past events, your save file isn’t one of them.

Nobody Wants to Die has a lot of smart political and philosophical thoughts that relate to what's happening today. There's a lot of intrigue and spotting all the Greek Mythology references is exciting, alluding to the story at hand. However, the crime scene gameplay can get repetitive and frustrating, as the story feels like it's on rails. It's nice to be able to play a game you can't fail, but it feels odd that there's a heightened sense of danger that just… never comes. Introducing elements like quick-time events late in the game and without accessibility options for them is disappointing. Even still, the game is gorgeous and watching a friendship bloom with the two main characters is great to see.
