There are a few issues which need taming, especially around the loading times on the Nintendo Switch. However, there is so much to do in Cattle Country! Engaging festivals and mini-games, intriguing character stories and one of the best mining experiences I’ve encountered. Cattle Country will be riding into my top games for this year!

Cattle Country defies the odds and certainly manages to make its mark on the life sim genre. It’s charming, fun, and packed with unexpected surprises and a thrilling sense of adventure that sets it apart from many of its competitors. The only question mark surrounding the title concerns its longevity. Post-launch content is key if Cattle Country is to become a titan of the genre, but if developers deliver on that front, this one could really go the distance.

There is tons to do and I’ve invested a good 20+ hours just sifting through the first year of the game and I’ve loved exploring every nook and cranny and ticking off as much as I can, making friends, protecting the community, and just losing hours gathering resources and taking in the gorgeous graphics. Not only does it bear many similarities to indie greats like Stardew Valley and Graveyard Keeper, but it puts its cowboy hat on and goes down as a must buy for 2025.

A lack of originality isn't surprising for this genre, but it's still disappointing. The non-innovative approach would be less of an issue were this game refined, but multiple quirks and outright bugs show that's not the case. The game could use more polish, so genre fans might be best waiting for a sale.

However, once the initial beauty of its pixel art wears off and the southern setting gradually loses its meaning, what's left is a perfectly mediocre entry in a genre that hit the point of oversaturation a few years past.
